Concept Text:

In a windy city like Rotterdam, umbrellas often break. The Rotterdam Umbrella Project is an initiative taking Rotterdam’s broken umbrellas and giving them a second life in the form of a rain jacket, a bicycle seat cover, and a bucket hat. Every product features a label indicating where in Rotterdam the umbrella broke. The textile of the umbrellas has been carefully taken apart and reused in order to maximise its already existing properties. Umbrellas are used to protect oneself from the rain and all of these products continue this legacy by providing the user with a form of protection from the elements. Additionally, umbrellas are made up of triangular sheets of fabric. This shape has been brought back in all of the designs in order to maximise fabric use, and tell the story of the origins of the fabric.
